The 5th Avenue Alternative School is a 30,000 SF Academic Building with a focus on college prep classes. The building is LEED Platinum certified. Building construction consisted of a two-story steel frame building with metal stud walls, Lath & Plaster exterior, trespa-panel siding, a flat roof (cold process applied built-up roof system with white reflective sealer and white rock ballast) and protruding light monitor along the central spine of the building. To achieve the LEED goals, the building was designed with a roof mounted PV system, high insulation value building skin, high efficiency glazing, thermally broken aluminum windows with operable lights for natural ventilation, sunshades, light shelves, chilled beam HVAC system, in slab radiant floor heating in the lobby and circulation areas, and energy efficient lighting and controls. The site also includes parking spaces for low emission vehicles, bike racks, low maintenance landscaping, and basketball/hard court areas.

The new school was built in a tight residential community creating challenges for the team to deal with site logistics, material deliveries, and emergency access, complying with the City’s noise ordinances, and preserve neighborhood trees. The site was protected 24/7 via security surveillance. The team truly worked with the neighborhood to build positive relationships.
